In February 2018 prolific Senegalese performer Lamine Sonko & The African Intelligence together with iconic Sudanese singer Ajak Kwai will be hitting Australian stages with their co-headline Afro Frequency Tour.
BEMAC is proud to presenting the Afro Frequency Tour’s only Brisbane show on Saturday, February 17 at Queensland Multicultural Centre in Kangaroo Point.
The show, which features two of Australia’s most celebrated neo-traditional African artists launches BEMACs’ new live music series, BEMAC LIVE.
Lamine Sonko & The African intelligence burst onto the Australian music scene back in 2014 delivering a crowd-stopping performance to over 50,000 people at Federation Square. Fronted by the charismatic, Lamine Sonko, one of Australia’s most celebrated African artists, the 10 piece ensemble captures the explosive rhythms of afro-beat, reggae and funk. Praised for his compelling melodies and distinct percussive blend of the traditional and contemporary, Lamine Sonko has been recognised for modernising West African music while maintaining the essence of ancient sounds and stories.
Ajak Kwai is a musician and storyteller of exceptional depth. A former refugee, she arrived in Australia 18 years ago. Singing in Arabic, Sudanese or English, Ajak’s music is inspiring and soulful, infused with funky afro-beats representing the depth and richness of her South Sudanese roots. Her performances are filled with vibrant sounds and her distinctive voice has mesmerised audiences nationally and internationally.
BEMAC LIVE: The Afro Frequency Tour will explore powerful messages of transcending borders and social equality, while presenting music from Lamine Sonko & The African intelligence’s new album Afro Empire (nominated for The Age Music Vic Awards) and Ajak Kwai’s critically acclaimed new album Of Cows, Women and War.
