BEMAC and Singout Sista Presents: Zulya & The Children of the Underground + Dijla
13 Dec 2013 | Friday 7:30pm to 10:30pm
The Singout Sista’s series continues to present the best leading female voices of world music. ARIA-award winning Zulya Kamalova and Brisbane diva, Bilge Ozgun of Dijla, join forces in one special night.
Zulya
Zulya Kamalova is the leading proponent of Tatar and Russian music in Australia and one of the most versatile and accomplished vocalists on the world music scene today.
Zulya has independently produced six albums to date, including ARIA-nominated elusive (2002) and, together with her band ‘The Children of the Underground’ released ARIA-winning 3 nights and 2004’s The Waltz of Emptiness both of which upon their release in Europe spent several months in the top 10 of European world music charts – a feat no other Australian album has ever achieved. Her latest release “Tales of Subliming” (2010) has received glowing 5 star reviews in Europe.
“Her band is exquisite.. but it’s [Zulya’s] rich, emotive vocals that shine. Her shimmering high register and swooping pitch-perfect lower range flutters and skips from to song to song with ease…It’s an incredibly sophisticated and brilliant instrument”, Dan Rule, The Age, Apr 07.
Dijla
Special guest Dijla, it is a Brisbane based world ensemble that combines soaring melodies from the Middle East with driving rhythms and heart-wrenching vocals. Led by singer Bilge Ozgun, Dijla brings together sounds of the Mediterranean, Central Asia and Turkey – the great meeting places between East and West.
Having performed with critical success at Brisbane Powerhouse and a number of Queensland festivals, Dijla opens the hearts of audiences with their sensitive delivery of folk songs and traditional art music.
The Singout Sista Project is assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory body.
