BEMAC presents SingOut Sista: Women of the World
11 Mar 2016 | Friday 7:00pm to 9:00pm
Women of the World celebrates culturally diverse female artists during Queensland Women’s Week.
What happens when you put six exceptional artists in a rehearsal room for a few days? You need to experience it to find out!
Queensland’s finest female artists from a myriad of backgrounds share the BEMAC’s stage for the first time. Featuring Melody Jettoo, Roz Pappalardo, Jackie Marshall, Toni Janke, Ruth Ghee and Sudha Manian; the repertoire will include some of their own songs as well as some unique collaborative pieces.
Soaring and committed slide guitar, smooth upright bass, rocking drums, mad keyboard, a vintage Fender guitar and a sassy front woman who rocks even when she sings a ballad.
Few words describe this amazing Torres Strait (Mer), South Sea (Ambrum) Islands and Aboriginal (Kabi Kabi) woman. Community leader, creative producer and curator. Language and song are her passions.
She has received awards in recognition of her contribution to Indigenous contemporary music as well as her song-writing ability, including a prestigious Deadly Award for Best Female Artist.
Renowned for her gutsy but tender vocal style, Jackie has twice been shortlisted for the Australian Music Prize. An incorrigible journey-woman who has scored an army of fans with her inate storytelling and personal delivery.
A soul singer of South African heritage with one of the earthiest warmest voices around. Member of the Verandah Chix and Xavier Rudd’s vocalist.
Sudha performs with a number of groups and is one of the most recognised female sitar players in Queensland.
This project has been supported by the Department of Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services and YWCA Queensland.
