WOMI Festival (World Music Ipswich)

Starring a jam packed lineup with music from across the globe, WOMI is a one-day world music festival showcasing and celebrating the vibrancy of Ipswich and South East Queensland’s culturally and linguistically diverse community.

Bursting with life, light and colour, WOMI also features multicultural food and artisanal market stalls, and brilliant Brazilian dancers, African Drummers and Vietnamese Lion roving entertainers.

Shanasheel Arabic Music Ensemble   

Shanasheel perform an evocative and inspiring repertoire from Iraq, Egypt, Syria and other regions of the Middle East. Featuring traditional instruments: Oud, ney, qanun, riq, joze, darbuka, combined with accordion, violin and double bass.

 

Matt Hsu’s Obscure Orchestra

A curious world of intricately crafted experimental music, made with world instruments and rethought everyday objects — the brainchild of award winner Dr Matt Hsu. The Obscure Orchestra ensemble is underpinned by gender equity, inclusion and visibility — and comprises of BIPOC, First Nations, non-binary and trans artists.

 

Eddie Gazani 

While originally from the heartland of sunshine, music and soul – Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Eddie Gazani who now resides in Australia, brings the Latin grooves of his home to his unique sounds. Inspired by a love of poetry and music from a young age, he threads the themes of love, politics and humanism into his lyrics.

 

MZAZA

Three-time Queensland Music Award winners MZAZA deliver Balkan-French inspired sounds to folk lovers internationally. Led by enchanting French-Sephardic vocalist Pauline Maudy, this group of musicians from around the world has been mesmerising audiences with powerful and inspired performances.

 

Sambaliscious

Join Mishel Finlayson, Australia’s very first Rio Carnival Muse, as you are taken to a whole new world of music, movement and vibrancy, which is the essence of Brazil! For the past 15 years, Mishel have taught thousands of people from all over the world to move and express themselves, so you’ll be in excellent hands!

 

No Way Jose

Hailing from a fantastic cross-cultural mix from Colombia and Australia, No Way José is a Brisbane based Latin Jazz trio comprised of the talented Juancho Manrique on piano, José Luis Mendez Rodriguez on percussion, and Milly Sargeant on vocals. Be ready to be taken to a whole new musical experience.

 

East of West

The trio formed in 2018 in order to explore new compositions that spring from the rich musical influences of the Balkans and the Mediterranean. East of West’s intricate story-telling compositions are spun over rich traditional rhythms, entwining elements of jazz and allowing space for open solos and improvisation.

 

Estampa

A world folk jazz band based in Brisbane. Estampa evokes visions of Parisian laneways, South American sensuality and the unbridled joy of jazz. Rooted in the traditions of French jazz and Brazilian Bossa Novas, it provides a unique musical experience that will leave you feeling like you’ve entered a 1930’s Parisian jazz club or the streets of São Paulo.

 

La Vinola

A Brisbane based group of talented, qualified musicians from various multicultural backgrounds come together to form a rich and energetic band. La Vinola is a newly formed Latin dance band playing a mix of musical styles from from Latin America and Spain including Rumba, Bossa nova, Son Cubano and Latin Jazz.

 

Mircha Mangiacotti Quartet

The Mircha Mangiacotti Quartet is made of members of the Gypsy Cats and award-winning singer and songwriter Pauline Maudy (Mzaza). Featuring Roberto Fontana on trumpet and Emma Hales on double bass as well as Mircha Mangiacotti on guitar, the quartet has been collaborating since 2018 and recently performed in a show called ‘Take Me To Paris’, which toured around northern Queensland in late 2021. Their WOMI set will feature a variety of classic French tunes as well as original compositions.

 

Sásta

Sásta (‘Happy’ in Irish) have made a huge impact on the Irish music scene in Australia. Made up of multi-instrumentalists who have performed at the highest national level. Pumping reels with phenomenal energy, and all of your favourite Irish songs, as well as superbly penned original tunes & songs that will have you up and dancing in no time!

 

Tibet2Timbuk2

With an eclectic repertoire including group arrangements of Tenzin’s Tibetan songs, Marcello’s English songs, collaborative songs and instrumentals and even classical tabla solo. The overall sound is full and organic, with all three musicians sharing bass, percussion, harmony, and melody roles to create a solid yet easy groove.

 

Zumpà

Be transported with Zumpà to forgotten Italian fishing villages, moonlit olive groves and a hard life under a hot sun where peasants play music to celebrate life with a fierce sense of humour. They provide the sounds and energy of folk, gypsy and Italian world music woven together to provide a truly spaghetti and meatballs experience.

 

Zhiva Voda

Be transported with Zumpà to forgotten Italian fishing villages, moonlit olive groves and a hard life under a hot sun where peasants play music to celebrate life with a fierce sense of humour. They provide the sounds and energy of folk, gypsy and Italian world music woven together to provide a truly spaghetti and meatballs experience.
