BEMAC Live: Dominoes and Rum
June 7 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm
‘Dominoes & Rum’ is an original theatre production written and directed by Nicholas ‘Prince’ Milverton. Set in the fictional Caribbean Island of Colibri, a developing country facing a major economic downturn and rising crime and violence. After 14 years in Australia, Ezra, a born Colibrian, returns to the island with the hope of reconnecting with his culture and community only to find himself navigating a social world that he only vaguely understands. Combining comedy with social research, this play shines a light on the exciting, awkward, uncomfortable and interesting realities of life in the developing world.
Writer and director Nicholas ‘Prince’ Milverton is a British/Jamaican/Australian artist, now residing in Brisbane, who has presented his work at Backbone Festival, Brisbane Fringe Festival, the Institute of Modern Art and La Boite Theatre. His work includes the theatre productions, ‘Stop that Nonsense!’, ‘The Double Text’ and ‘The Old Man and the Robot’ as well as the feature film, ‘My Win is Yours’.
‘Dominoes & Rum’ is influenced by his experiences in Jamaica as well as a set of interviews that were conducted on individuals who had returned to their respective nations.
Ezra is played by Rwandese-Australian artist Donne Ngabo, recent WAAPA graduate who references his identity and cultural memory both as a performer and as a writer. His co-lead in the play is Ethiopian-Australian actress Fikrte Bushell, who takes pride in developing original productions which represent the African diaspora.
