Gosti i Gosti (Guests and Guests) is an exciting collaborative performance featuring the music of world class trio ‘Gosti’ together with three special guests, creating fresh, mostly improvised music based on the various cultural, musical backgrounds and influences that each of the players brings to the mix. The music is mostly improvised with a freshness that this style of collaboration can create.
Gosti are Tunji Beier (percussion), Philip Griffin (strings) and Linsey Pollak (winds), three multi-talented musicians who have played together over many years in various combinations (such as Ross Daly’s Australian Labrinth, Dididumdum, The Balkanics, Makedonski Bop and Dva). Each of the three players brings a diverse array of sounds, skills, styles, and emotional content to the music that develops and extends each of their compositions, many of which are influenced by Macedonian traditional music with a focus on rhythmic variation and non-Western modes.
For this unique performance, Gosti will collaborate with three ‘guests’ of their own: Nawres Al-Freh, Takako Nishibori and Geoffrey Tjakamarra.
Nawres Al-Freh who trained at the Baghdad Conservatorium and has been playing classical and Arabic violin, joze and kamanche for nearly two decades.
Takako Nishibori who has been playing the koto since the age of six and studied with Koto Grand Master Shizu Fujino from Ikuta Ryu Miyagi school.
Geoffrey Tjakamarra, whose skin name comes from the WA Kimberley kin naming system, crafts a new, contemporary hybrid Indigenous sound influenced by hip-hop, reggae, funk and of course sounds from their ancestral Aboriginal culture playing the Didjeribone (a slide Didgeridoo) and the Facebass (a seismic microphone placed inside the mouth).
