BEMAC is delighted to present Menaka’s performance ‘On The Horizon’ on 13 November, as part of our month long concert series, bringing back the energy and electric atmosphere of live music.

While Menaka hails from a musical family deeply rooted in South Indian classical music, her exploration within realms of song writing has endowed her with a unique sound, which intersects traditional and contemporary, East and West.

MORE ABOUT MENAKA

Menaka experiences a great sense of fulfilment and freedom in being able to express the devotion of Indian music with other world music sounds. It enables and challenges her to use her voice in different ways and explore melody and harmony with freedom and creativity.

Menaka studied the traditional art of South Indian (Carnatic) music from a young age of 5 from her mother, Vijaya Visvanathan, the first Indian classical music teacher in Brisbane. The thing that she most keenly imbibed from her mother’s training is the essence of devotion, humility and surrender that is embedded within traditional Indian music. Menaka learnt how to access a deeper sense of connection to something bigger than just her own little self. Music then became her meditation.Menaka performed with her mother as a child and teenager on many musical platforms, including Woodford Folk Festival, Queensland Multicultural Festival and a multitude of community events.

After a sudden deterioration in her health that nearly claimed her vision, Menaka found herself writing songs to help her overcome the challenges she was facing. This was the catalyst to putting together her debut solo album, “My Eyes Can See”. Her sound is a fusion of traditional Indian vocals with contemporary and other world influences; an intersection of East and West.

Currently, Menaka continues to write, create, teach and perform. Her vision is to unite, inspire and create inner peace through music.

What are my parking options for getting to and from the event?

• Free parking is conveniently located at the venue for up to 56 cars.
• Brisbane City Council pay and display parking is also available on Main Street and surrounding streets.
• The street parking is free after 5pm on weekdays and all weekend.

What are my transport options for getting to and from the event?

• Public Transport From CBD:
• By Bus: Catch bus 232 at Edward Street Stop 142 (near Queen Street) to Main Street at Story Bridge East, Stop 6.
• By Ferry: Catch a free ferry from Eagle Street Pier Ferry Terminal to Holman Street Ferry Terminal. Walk 307m to 102 Main St, Kangaroo Point. Ferry leaves every 15 minutes.

Does the venue have a COVID-safe plan in place?

The Queensland Multicultural Centre (QMC) is committed to ensuring a safe environment for both our workers and guests/patrons. Under the direction of the Queensland Department of Housing and Public Works, we have taken extra precautionary measures to help mitigate the spread of the virus, and are therefore limiting numbers on patron capacity, and seating arrangements at all events.

QMC will be operating in compliance with an Industry COVID SAFE plan for Live Performance Venues/Theatres. Our venue’s operations will continue to be conducted in accordance with the current government guidelines. We will continuously review our operations and procedures based on the government restrictions and circumstances surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic.
