Maria Kim from South Korea studied piano at an early age, participated in the “Vocals and a scholarship from the Berkeley College of Music World Scholarship Tour” held in South Korea at the age of 18 and won the first prize. She then continued her studies at the New England Conservatory, where she developed her own unique style, combined with free jazz.
In 2013, Maria Kim was first recognized for her talent by Jazz People magazine, becoming the first “Rising Star” to be selected by Jazz People magazine in both vocal and piano categories. Since then, Maria has released six albums of works directed, written, written, played and sung by her, leading the domestic market, ranking first on the music website Jazz Chart, being selected as “New Face of Korean Jazz 2016” by EBS, and being selected as “Jazz People”, “MM Jazz” and “Melon” as Album of the Year.
Maria won the Best Jazz-Vocal Album category at the 2022 K-Pop Awards for her album “With Strings: Dream of You” released by Sony Music, and won the Jazz Audio Record Award from Japanese Jazz Critics. The live album “Two for the Road” was shortlisted for the Best Jazz Vocal Album category at the K-Pop Awards for two consecutive years, and the work was also selected as Album of the Year and recommended by 11 pop critics from the Korea Ilbo, the most recognized press in Korea.
In 2023, Maria won the Jazz Artist Award at the 29th Korea Performing Arts Awards, cementing her status as Korea’s leading jazz musician.
In addition, it is worth mentioning that this year Maria will lead her trio on a world tour and debut on the North American record market with a brand new track “Tight”, the first single from her new LP album “Misty Blue”, with trumpet and singer Benny Benack III, who is also instrumental and vocal, and will be released in the United States in early June this year. Maria Kim is not only a leader in Korean jazz music, but also a musician who has found the perfect balance between pop and artistry.
