SUPERHEROES

“Ingenious… sizzles the synapses.”- Sydney Morning Herald
“…spirals its way under your skin.”- Limelight
Two young women, worlds apart, both at breaking point.
It’s November, 2017. On the south coast of NSW, Emily has forgotten her nephews’ birthday party and needs her ex-boyfriend to answer her texts. In Mostar, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Jana’s trip to the grocery store puts her smack bang in the middle of the European refugee crisis.
At two points on the globe, these stories play out in parallel. And with no caped dudes in spandex coming to the rescue, it’s up to Emily and Jana to save themselves. But what does it mean to take responsibility for our actions? And what does being a hero really look like?
Featuring twinned monologues threaded through with scenes of devastating humanity, this masterful play comes to Magandjin for the first time, staged by the award-winning team behind Naked & Screaming (Best Production, 2022 Matilda Awards). The only play to win both of Australia’s major new play prizes in the same year, Superheroes is a truly original work – savage, tender and hopeful.
Warning: This production contains blackouts, flickering lights, haze, and loud noises. It also contains coarse language, sexual references, discussions around war and mental illness, and theatrical depictions of racial and physical violence. We understand the themes may be triggering for some people. If you have any concerns about the content of the play, we encourage you to contact the Queensland Theatre Box Office.

Artist Talk: Distant Fires: Telling Stories of Home, Conflict, and Survival
How do artists tell stories of the places they come from—especially when those places have been shaped by war, displacement, and survival—and how does that storytelling shift when shared far from home? Join director, Sanja Simić and playwright, Jordan Shea as they unpack the complexities of creating work for audiences unfamiliar with that reality. What does it mean to honour the truth of those stories in a new context—often away from community in places untouched by war?
