Brisbane City Council’s Art Bites – Africa is a programme of free arts workshops designed for all Brisbane residents to explore the traditions of the African continent and discover their creative abilities. Learn West African drumming, create delicious Eritrean meals or shake your hips to the wild dance of The Congo. These workshops are for everyone. Grab a friend or make new ones while discovering the colourful nations of Africa!
SONG, DANCE, ETHIOPIA
Dancer, actor and songstress Senayt Mebrahtu, will lead you on a delightful cultural journey to the high plateaus and vast deserts of Ethiopia teaching traditional song and dance. Discover the wondrous culture of this ancient land.
Facilitator – SENAYT MEBRAHTU
Senayt is an actor, dancer, singer & community leader. She founded the Abyssinian Dance Group who perform regularly around Queensland. Aside from being cast in a variety of film and theatre, Senayt is well respected as a traditional Ethiopian singer. Ethiopian folk music is lauded as unique, having a distinct modal system that is pentatonic with characteristically long intervals between some notes. Recently, Senayt travelled back to Ethiopia where she recorded 2 original Ethiopian tracks soon to be released in Ethiopia and Australia.
