BEMAC presents World Music Café: Don Kon Ten Shan
14 Oct 2016 | Friday 7:30pm to 9:10pm
Experience the exquisite harmony of classical Japanese instruments in this contemporary fusion of East and West.
Fresh from performances at BrisAsia Festival and Wa-Gakki at Brisbane City Hall, Don Kon Ten Shan is a new Brisbane-based band comprised of four internationally renowned musicians. Hailing from Japan and Australia, band members are: Takako Nishibori (world renowned master of koto and shamisen); Phil Wilson (Oz Music Awards Finalist, and composer for the award winning Deep Blue Orchestra); Chie Kajiwara and Steve Mason (Woodford Folk Festival, Queensland Multicultural Festival, GOMA, QPAC).
Prepare to journey through old and new Japan as Don Kon Ten Shan* combines the traditional music of the koto (Japanese harp), taiko (drums), shamisen (banjo), shinobue (flute) and narimono (percussion) with Western instruments including acoustic guitar and piano.
*Don Kon Ten Shan: syllables used to describe the sounds of the koto and taiko.
Food available from the BEMAC Kitchen.
