Brisbane International Jazz Festival presents: Rafael Karlen with Rosenberg String Quartet + Joseph O’Connor Solo Piano

Prolific composer Rafael Karlen launches his new CD “The Sweetness of Things Half-Remembered” with a formidable line up Brisbane’s most talented string players and jazz musicians.
Rafael’s original creation seamlessly weaves elements from jazz and Western art music through skilful composition and tasteful improvisations. The inventive and lyrical playing of pianist Steve Newcomb and saxophonist Rafael Karlen is showcased soaring over the beautiful musical environments and colourful string textures of the Rosenberg String Quartet.

For the closing BIJF concert at QMC pianist, composer and improviser Joseph O’Connor performs a solo piano set on the magnificent Kawai “Shigeru” Concert Grand that is guaranteed to take your breath away.
Joseph graduated from the Queensland Conservatorium in 2010 with a Bachelor of Music – First Class Honours majoring in advanced performance and was recipient of the Conservatorium Medal, awarded to the highest achieving student in their graduating year. In 2013 Joseph was awarded 1st Prize at the National Jazz awards held at the Wangaratta Jazz Festival. Joseph is currently based in Melbourne undertaking a PhD in musical performance at Monash University.
