SUMMARY:Inheritance by Toni Janke
DESCRIPTION:A bold and deeply moving theatrical experience\, Inheritance is a poetic and musical journey into identity\, resilience\, and the sacred bonds that connect us across time. Created and performed by acclaimed First Nations artist Toni Janke at QPAC’s intimate Cremorne Theatre\, this live music show weaves original songs\, storytelling\, and lived experience into a tapestry of profound cultural memory and spiritual reclamation. At its heart lies a question that resonates with all of us: What do we truly inherit – and what will we choose to pass on? \nFramed around the metaphor of a “precious jewel” gifted through generations\, Inheritance explores the intangible treasures of ancestry – our stories\, values\, and worldviews – and how they shape our understanding of self\, belonging\, and purpose. Through heartfelt ballads\, soul-infused lyricism\, and vibrant acoustic soundscapes\, Janke creates a dynamic fusion that speaks directly to the heart. \n“When I was growing up\, singing and storytelling were such an important part of our culture\, and still are today\,” reflects Janke. “While spoken word can convey truth\, music and song captivates the spirit. Together they weave memory\, history\, and emotion into something that you don’t just hear – but you actually feel and experience.” \nJanke is joined by an exceptional ensemble including musicians Nicole Perry\, Caz Higgs\, and Kevin Haigh\, actors Zalika Bani-Ghee and Emily Reid\, and First Nations dancers Tjilala Brown-Roberts and Harold Pascoe with choreography by Jeanette Fabila. \nA proud descendant of the Wuthathi\, Yadhaigana\, and Meriam peoples\, Janke has sustained a remarkable 35-year career across music and First Nations advocacy. Presented through a meaningful partnership between QPAC and BEMAC\, Inheritance is not just a performance – it is a soul-to-soul exchange that transforms\, heals\, and inspires. \nPhoto: Ange Costes Photography \nPresented by BEMAC and QPAC. \n7:00pm\, Thursday 2 April\nCremorne Theatre\nQPAC\, South Brisbane\nTickets $49 via QPAC \nCultural Content Advisory\nAboriginal and Torres Strait Islander audiences are advised that this production contains images of people who have passed away.\nWarning\nThis production contains depictions of domestic violence\, suicidal thoughts\, addiction/substance abuse\, and racism\, including racial slurs.\nAge Recommendation\nRecommended for ages 12+.\nAccessibility\nFor wheelchair users\, Companion Card holders or those requiring assistance\, dedicated seating options are available\, and bookings can be made through our Call Centre by calling QPAC on 136 246. SUMMARY:SUPERHEROES
DESCRIPTION:“Ingenious… sizzles the synapses.”- Sydney Morning Herald \n“…spirals its way under your skin.”- Limelight \nTwo young women\, worlds apart\, both at breaking point.  \nIt’s November\, 2017. On the south coast of NSW\, Emily has forgotten her nephews’ birthday party and needs her ex-boyfriend to answer her texts. In Mostar\, Bosnia-Herzegovina\, Jana’s trip to the grocery store puts her smack bang in the middle of the European refugee crisis. \nAt two points on the globe\, these stories play out in parallel. And with no caped dudes in spandex coming to the rescue\, it’s up to Emily and Jana to save themselves. But what does it mean to take responsibility for our actions? And what does being a hero really look like? \nFeaturing twinned monologues threaded through with scenes of devastating humanity\, this masterful play comes to Magandjin for the first time\, staged by the award-winning team behind Naked & Screaming (Best Production\, 2022 Matilda Awards). The only play to win both of Australia’s major new play prizes in the same year\, Superheroes is a truly original work – savage\, tender and hopeful.  \nWarning: This production contains blackouts\, flickering lights\, haze\, and loud noises. SUMMARY:Nadia Milford's The Last Princess of Lebanon
DESCRIPTION:The Last Princess of Lebanon is a powerful one-woman show that traces the extraordinary journey of Amira (Princess) Nadia Abillama of Lebanon who migrated from the palaces of Beiteddine to a humble Queenslander in the small town of Dalby\, told by her great-granddaughter Nadia Milford from intimately conducted research and with a script of her own writing. \nAs young Nadia embarks on her own journey into womanhood\, she begins to realise that the challenges her great-grandmother faced are not distant echoes\, but are alive within her. In confronting these parallels\, she discovers that her inheritance is not only one of bloodline but of emotional resilience\, and that her path is not just about embracing a family legacy\, but about questioning\, redefining\, and ultimately transforming it. \nSet against a captivating soundscape of traditional Lebanese music\, performed by Samira El Koussa\, and contemporary tracks\, with sound design by Anna Whitaker\, sets by Penny Challen and directed by Leah Shelton\, The Last Princess of Lebanon is a deeply physical piece that seamlessly blends dance and theatre\, forging a hybrid format that moves fluidly between these disciplines. \nAt its heart\, The Last Princess of Lebanon is a deeply personal yet universal story—a testament to the enduring power of heritage and the strength of women to write their own stories. \n \nThe Last Princess of Lebanon is presented in partnership with BEMAC\, a subsidiary of Settlement Services International. This project is supported by the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland; Empire Theatres Pty Ltd; the Regional Arts Development Fund\, a partnership between the Queensland Government with Western Downs Regional Council to support local arts and culture in regional Queensland; the City of Gold Coast; and HOTA\, Home of the Arts. \nAbout BEMAC Presents \nBEMAC Presents features world-leading artists whose work pushes through the boundaries of identity to pose important questions\, challenge entrenched ideas\, and enable change; role models for the diverse and representative arts sector that BEMAC exists to enrich. SUMMARY:BEMAC Presents: JADE Ensemble and ZÖJ (Victoria)
DESCRIPTION:Get Tickets \nTwo distinctive music-making processes collude in an emotionally stirring double bill of virtuosic cross-cultural music exploration. Local luminaries JADE Ensemble share a night of deep cultural meeting points with Victoria-based experimental music duo ZÖJ\, both groups united by the commitment to explore and intertwine the sounds and personal narratives of the multiple identities that converge within them.  \nJADE Ensemble explores the length and breadth of Australia’s evolving cultural landscape through a repertoire or original music and rare arrangements fusing Asian and Western classical elements. Consisting of four core musicians\, JADE features Indigenous didgeridoo musician David Williams\, Japanese koto master Takako Haggarty\, Nepalese tabla virtuoso Dheeraj Shrestha\, and Australian guitarist and composer Dr Anthony Garcia. The group has performed and collaborated with an eclectic collective of international and local artists\, presented lectures on intercultural music-making and cultural diplomacy and most recently recorded a series of new tracks for the City Symphonies project for Queensland Music Festival.  \nZÖJ is an experimental cross-cultural music duo based in Victoria\, comprising Gelareh Pour on Voice and Kamancheh (Persian spiked fiddle) and Brian O’Dwyer on drumkit. Extensively using contemporary Persian poetry in their sound\, the duo has been creating music as ZÖJ since 2016 but have worked together in other projects since 2012. The ideals of ZÖJ are firmly rooted in true expression of inter-culturalism\, specifically what it means to be from more than one place. Renowned for their emotionally stirring and groundbreaking free-form music\, the duo has carved out a reputation for performances that delve into the depths of human emotions and politically charged societal commentary. Gelareh Pour\, originally from Iran\, is a singer and master of the kamancheh and has won several awards for her work. Brian O’Dwyer is an Australian born drummer who explores sound as connection and involves the incredible dynamic shift\, ebbing and flowing with the various influences in the room where he performs.  \nWith commonly firm roots in improvisation\, responsiveness and cultural permeability\, this double-feature presents a firm thesis of harmonious collaboration fuelled by human differences\, and of music as a vehicle for much needed societal change.   \nAbout BEMAC Presents \nBEMAC Presents features world-leading artists whose work pushes through the boundaries of identity to pose important questions\, challenge entrenched ideas\, and enable change; role models for the diverse and representative arts sector that BEMAC exists to enrich. One year on from the long awaited arrival of Artistic Director\, Yasim Coronado Veranes’ son Christopher in Australia from Cuba\, this work calls out the forces that keep us apart and shares the magic that people create regardless. \nThe shared stories of immigration from the ensemble weave a patchwork of journeys that lead to a common desire for community\, connection and home. ‘Granted’ features an international soundtrack and the company’s unique fusion of cultural\, contemporary and urban dance styles and speaks to the very heart of the group’s existence as a vessel for sharing dance\, culture and friendship that would not exist without migration. \nNUDO (meaning knot in Spanish) is a cultural and contemporary dance company creating atmospherically capturing and culturally grounded movement works. Reflecting the artistic visions of incredible fusion dance artist Yasim Coronado Veranes\, NUDO brings together a diverse ensemble of dancers. \nAs a new company\, NUDO are here to change the landscape of contemporary dance in Australia\, sharing powerful stories held in the dance lineages and experiences of their artists. SUMMARY:BEMAC Presents Tenzin Choegyal: Be the Ocean
DESCRIPTION:Tenzin Choegyal’s new concert series\, Be the Ocean\, continues to explore subtle aspects of the five elements – earth\, water\, fire\, air and space. In this cross-cultural collaboration Tenzin’s powerful voice and intuitive poetry invoke a special sense of peace\, strength and emotional connection. Through music\, narration and visuals the artists weave an evocative soundscape\, drawing on the strong allegory of the ocean to inspire new thoughts\, stir shifts in perspective and create space for contemplation.  \nArtist\, composer\, activist\, musical director and cultural ambassador\, Tenzin Choegyal is one of the world’s finest musicians in the Tibetan tradition\, proudly continuing the nomadic lineage which is central to his repertoire. He continues to draw inspiration from classical Tibetan texts and poetry at the same time taking an experimental approach to sound\, instrumentation and musical performance. In this premiere for Tenzin’s national Be the Ocean tour\, he will be joined by multi-instrumentalist Cye Wood\, koto master Takako Nishibori and the thundering sounds of Taiko drums led by Kaya Tominaga and her ensemble. \nBEMAC Presents features world-leading artists whose work pushes through the boundaries of identity to pose important questions\, challenge entrenched ideas\, and enable change; role models for the diverse and representative arts sector that BEMAC exists to enrich. SUMMARY:BEMAC Presents the Joe Geia Band: From Rations to Wages to Treaty
DESCRIPTION:Through 16 original songs\, iconic singer/songwriter\, guitarist\, didgeridoo player Joe Geia takes us through his 40-year career writing and performing songs that tell of Indigenous activism\, resistance and transformation. Combining music with storytelling\, archival footage and his own visual work\, Geia tells the stories of strong Elders and leaders who fought to ensure justice for Indigenous peoples. Music and video work together to tell us of Pastor Don Brady\, Uncle Willie Thaiday and of his own father\, Albie Geia\, one of the leaders of the historic 1957 Palm Island strike and the fight for fair wages and conditions. Interwoven stories of resistance and transformation recount the harshness of living under “The Act”\, the origins of the Brisbane Blaks movement\, and the beginning of Murri Radio. At a time where the Uluru Statement of the Heart is forefront in Australian minds\, Joe Geia and his band tell of the fight for justice and sing to a much-needed transformational change. \nThis will be the inaugural show of BEMAC’s 2023 program. The complete program will be announced at the QMC on February 25\, before the start of the show. Join us in celebrating the vibrant diverse creative community and help us elevate the artists and their artistry. \n7:30pm\, Saturday\, February 25th\nQueensland Multicultural Centre\n102 Main Street\, Kangaroo Point QLD\nTickets: https://bit.ly/3VZXaei \n  \nGet Tickets \nThere is very limited parking around the QMC. We encourage all guests to use public transport.
