Hot Double Bill!
East Journey is a young Aboriginal band from Yirrkala in North East Arnhem Land, NT. Fusing contemporary with traditional music, they share language, culture and country through music, song and dance.
Through the guidance and encouragement from their elders including the legendary Mandawuy Yunupingu (Yothu Yindi), this exciting combination of rock and acoustic melding with the earthy traditional sounds of the yidaki (didgeridoo) and bilma (clap sticks) form a vibrant and fresh direction for Australian Indigenous music.
East Journey’s debut album Guwak, was released in 2012 where “Song of Arnhem Land” was picked up by triple j, ABC Local and Radio Australia for airplay. It entered the AMRAP Great Southern Charts for Easy Listening and was in the Top 10 for two weeks. Guwak has since been positively reviewed by The Australian, Sydney Morning Herald and The Age.
At the National Indigenous Music Awards 2012, East Journey lived up to the hype as the ‘most anticipated act’ on the line up and a performance that saw the 2500 person audience surge to the stage and begin dancing. That same week East Journey were featured as the Australian Independent Record Labels Association ‘Artist of the Week’ [Aug 2012].
Catch the band before they head to Melbourne to showcase at the prestigious Australasian World Music Expo.
“Explosive” – Rolling Stone Magazine, Sep 2012
“The closest the Northern Territory has ever got to producing an indigenous mainstream stadium rock band.” – Sydney Morning Herald, Aug 2012
“East Journey’s lead singer Rrawun Maymuru, who has sung with Yothu Yindi, has an angelic and mellifluous voice that is as spiritually charged as Gurrumul’s on Guwak’s more subdued offerings, for example the poignant Warwu.” – The Australian, July 2012

Slip-On Stereo is a funky and fresh Brisbane-based 4-piece band and has been considered the “new kids on the block” since breaking onto the scene in early 2012. Self-described as “summer sounds”, their style is a unique blend of Funk, RnB, Reggae & anything else they feel inspired to throw in the mix. These boys don’t look like easing up any time soon with the recent release of their first 3-track EP titled “When Life Gives You Lemons” which has received rave reviews from listeners.
Zeek Power and Clint Wallace lead the band vocally while also holding the rhythm on guitars. Their trademark vocal sound and mix of gospel-flavoured harmonies were honed from playing in a small church band in Rockhampton. Clint is a familiar face as ex-bass guitarist of well-known Rockhampton born band, Busby Marou and Zeek is the latest YouTube sensation with his solo work under his name “Zeek Power”. Former Rookie band members, bass guitarist Phil Moore and drummer Ash Moore hold the funky heartbeat of the band together.
Slip-on Stereo has just returned from a successful North Queensland tour supporting Busby Marou, creating a wave of fans in their wake. The boys have set their sights towards 2013 with a calendar full of gigs and a full-length album in progress. After featuring on Virgin’s Home CD and showcasing at the launch to industry acclaim at the recent Big Sound Music Conference in Brisbane, there is no doubt that 2013 is going to be the year of the “SOS” boys.
