Calling all adventurous young musicians! Ethno Australia returns for 2012 and it’s time to get together and get creative.

What is Ethno?
Ethno is an initiative of Jeunesses Musicales International (JMI) and a unique project for traditional/folk musicians aged 15-30. Ethno camps are held annually across the world and include a series of summer music camps in Belgium, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, England, Estonia, Macedonia, Slovenia, Sweden, Uganda and Australia and additionally some touring projects for smaller ensembles. Each Ethno draws participants from around the globe. At Ethno, young folk musicians meet to teach each other by ear, traditional folk songs from their cultures. Through a combination of workshops, jam sessions, seminars, and performances, musicians have the opportunity to learn a variety of musical styles. Bringing together participants from a variety of cultural backgrounds, Ethno is a space for inter-cultural learning, friendship, and exchange.
This year, camp participants will be joined by a number of artists from across the globe that are descending on Queensland for Woodford Folk Festival, as well as having the opportunity to share amongst themselves and work with Ethno facilitators.
Some of the key outcomes will include a performance in King George Square on December 21 as part of BEMAC’s annual end of year gig, World By Night; a feature performance as part of the Woodford Folk Festival opening ceremony; programmed slots as part of the Festival entertainment; the opportunity to collaborate with other artists and maximise the artist full-season camping pass, and much much more…
Participants can arrive any time after 2pm on Sunda,y 16 December and the camp concludes at 10am on Sunday 23 December. Participants then have the option of relocating camp to the allocated performer’s area. Participants will be expected to be on-site from 9am on the 27 December for rehearsals for the opening ceremony of the Woodford Folk festival and will have the opportunity to perform both as part of the Ethno Australia Orchestra, in addition to collaborating in smaller groups for a number of performances across the Festival program.
“Ethno is a melting pot of music, traditions and positive vibrations from all over the world.”
