Planet: Oct Saturday Sessions with Mzaza & Friends
06 Oct 2012 | Saturday
Do you have a taste for the exotic but can’t afford a world trip? That’s ok. We’re bringing the world to you.
October Planet will transport you to the captivating sounds of the Mediterranean with Brisbane’s favourite world music act, Mzaza.
Mzaza’s unique stage show captures audiences and takes them on a journey around the Mediterranean. Born to French and Moroccan parents, vocalist Pauline Maudy weaves a travel story beginning in her home town, Paris accompanied by the serendipitous accordion and violin. Flamenco guitar and cajon signpost her entry into Spanish territory, and the exotic sounds of kamanche (Middle-Eastern spike-fiddle) spell her arrival in Tunisia. Circumnavigating the Mediterranean, we visit Turkey with the firey rhythms of the darabuka and the soulful ney. The adventures end in the Balkans where the kaval (Balkan flute) busts out wild dance tunes with some special guests. Dancing encouraged!
Mzaza had two sell-out shows at Brisbane Powerhouse in 2010 and 2011. Not to be missed!
“Mzaza are one of the day’s most intriguing acts. The locals perform with traditional percussion and wind instruments as well as acoustic guitar and accordion, as singer Pauline Maudy sings multi-lingual ballads that transport the listener to Parisian alleyways one minute, then Eastern European gypsy campfires and dramatic Spanish landscapes the next.” – Matt Thrower, Rave Magazine, 10th of June 2009
“Passionate, infectious, haunting, Turkish, Bulgarian, Andalucian – words won’t express it.”- Tony Preece, Big Orange Chair, 2011
