Shakuhachi: Meditating in the music soul
01 Sep 2014 | Monday 6:30pm to 9:00pm
Shakuhachi is an end-blown Japanese flute, its sound is deeply moving and seeps into the soul. Join this meditation workshop with renowned shakuhachi player Carl Rathus, and dive into an unforgettable soul searching journey.
The shakuhachi is crafted from the root-end of bamboo. The history of the instrument and its music extends deep into the meditative Zen Buddhist tradition.
As a master of this instrument, Carl has played at the last two World Shakuhachi Festivals: Sydney in 2008 and in Kyoto in 2012. For the past two decades he has been teaching shakuhachi and performing numerous times in South East Queensland.
Carl specialises in the Zen inspired honkyoku repertoire, which is predominantly a solo style. He also plays tmodern styles and explores new possibilities; including fusion with Indian classical music.
