Tiina Alinen presents “Moments of Self”

Tiina Alinen presents “Moments of Self”

Tiina Alinen is bringing a unique and inspiring performance that explores place identity and ageing to Queensland Multicultural Centre on February 3 and 4, with performers who will inspire and surprise you.

With inter-generational exchange at the heart of her artistic practice, Tiina Alinen has created a community dance performance that seeks to invite audiences to look at ageing through new eyes.

‘Moments of Self’ is the product of work Tiina has been engaged in with a group of Brisbane residents who she said inspire her through the way they live life. Ranging from 20-somethings to people in their 70s, the group has been dancing together since 2014.

Through Moments of Self Ms Alinen said she is trying to capture a moment of their true self in a place that inspires them. The project has embraced people of all ages, gender and life experience who wanted to share their story, and in so doing highlights the diverse beauty of Brisbane and its people.

Her vision is to share this project with many communities, turning ‘Moments of Self’ into a series of community arts celebrations that honour self, community and our special places.

Performer Alice Owen said the project was an opportunity for her to engage with her innermost creativity and reflect on aspects of her life through dance.

The 70-year-old has had a remarkable career, using her artistic passion and speech therapy over the past 50 years to develop progress with those who suffer from communication barriers. Her love for dance from a very young age is a fire that continues to burn strong in her everyday life.

“Moments of Self provides moments of trust in a world of judgement and experts,” she said.

“It’s never too late, here I am at 70, I started dance therapy training in 1991 when I was 44 and it took about six to seven years because of the way it was structured. I just kept going.

“I think what’s wrong with western society is that we have so much judgement. In this world it’s about experts.

“Dance is my joy and I’m going to do it”.
