The Brisbane Multicultural Arts Centre (BEMAC) will conclude its 13-year operation of the Queensland Multicultural Centre (QMC) in Kangaroo Point on 28 February 2026.

BEMAC has been the sole operator of the QMC since it was first opened after moving from neighbouring historical site Yungaba House.

BEMAC’s presence at Kangaroo Point forms part of a broader 40-year story embedded in the cultural fabric of the area, supporting thousands of intercultural artists and communities to share their stories at the QMC — their voices have authored the cultural legacy of this place.

As a SSI subsidiary, BEMAC’s work sits within a national commitment to supporting newly arrived and diverse communities to build lives and connections through culture and creativity.

This ongoing legacy is defined by amplified voices, traditions, arts, and creative expressions of diverse communities who have made Queensland home.

Hannah Attwood, National Arts and Culture Manager, BEMAC and SSI says:

“For thirteen years, BEMAC has sustained a creative practice at the QMC, where we have had the privilege of platforming artists, animating the architecture with sound, movement, dialogue and ceremony, and nurturing collaborations that have materially shaped Queensland’s evolving cultural ecology.”

BEMAC’s Arts Queensland-funded artistic programme will continue into 2026 and beyond by diversifying its platforms and activating multiple venues and creative spaces across the region.

This strategic expansion creates generative opportunities to collaborate with new partners, reach new communities and continue to support diverse artistic voices across multiple contexts.

In April BEMAC will launch its 2026 artistic program ‘Liminal World’, moving from one stage to many — broadening its reach while deepening its impact.

The QMC is managed by the Department of Housing and Public Works (HPW) who will appoint a new venue operator from 1 March 2026.

HOW TO GET INVOLVED

We love music and art. We believe it has the power to transform lives and communities. It brings people together, dissolves barriers and teleports us into distant lands by leading us into the very soul of culture.
