June News

June was a very busy month for BEMAC and we kicked it off with the ever-popular Zillmere Festival. Rain didn’t dampen spirits and the local community, world music lovers, our artists, crew, stall holders, volunteers and many others came out to O’Callaghan Park with gusto, armed in gumboots and brollies in tow.  A few hours later, we were pleased to head indoors into dry weather at the Powerhouse for June Planet, which had a special offering of traditional and contemporary Chinese music.  We were very pleased to partner with Multicultural Events for the very first time on this show and hope it is the start of a new and fruitful friendship.  In mid-June, the gorgeous Sunas, headed by songstress Sarah Calderwood, entertained the lunchtime crowd at Eagle St Pier as part of the Lunchtime Concerts – Music by the River series.

Fete de la Musique came around once again and this year BEMAC hosted a stage in Moorooka for the first time.  We want to thank our artists for performing at the city-wide festival – The African Drummer and Group, Asim Gorashi, Tichawona Mashawa, Alvin and Sunny Dread.  Moorooka residents spent a lazy lunchtime in the cosy Luxworth Place green, treated to some of the best world music artists in Brisbane.  You can catch Asim and Tichawona in his band, Umkancho, this Saturday for the July Planet at the Powerhouse.

If you didn’t make it to our Planet Focus on Fusion show in the Visy Theatre, you should be very disappointed!  It was an incredibe music journey starting with a unique blend of Japanese traditional folk songs in the first act with Carl Rathus, Ravi Singh and Takako Nishibori crossing into Chinese and Tibetan folk and roots music featuring Dr Nicholas Ng and Tibet2Timbuk2 in the second act .  Both acts were underscored with the mesmerising and intricate beats of the tabla.   It was a special night.

Our Annual General Meeting was held last Tuesday and thank-you to everyone who attended or sent in apologies.  We are delighted to announce our three new board members and welcome them to the team – Athol Young, Harold Littler and Neville Conway.  BEMAC want to express our thanks to our outgoing board members, Vladis Kosse and Stefan Treyvaud for their immense contribution and passion to BEMAC during their tenure.

We have some great shows and opportunites coming up in July, so get out your diaries, mark them up and we look forward to seeing you at one of our events!
