Mid-July News

Here we are into the new financial year.  Time certainly flies and already the year has been so full, with a lot more to come.  Tonight (Thu 19 July) is the much anticipated Planet show at the Visy Theatre at the Powerhouse, Rhythm of Melanesia.  The final rehearsals were fantastic and the line-up of artists is a real treat – Georgia Corowa, Jagar and Cathy Lee to name just a few.  One thing for sure, the local Melanesian community is alive and well and making amazing music.  Make sure you don’t miss out and grab a ticket through Brisbane Powerhouse.  The show starts at 7pm so see you there.

This month’s free Planet July on the Turbine Platform was one of the best Saturdays we have had!  Asim Gorashi kicked off the performance with a superb display of his multi-instrumental talents – and songs in five different languages.  Umkancho then finished off the night with some funky Zimbabwean tunes.  They are an outfit that can truly be called a multicultural band!  Five different nationalities represented – Zimbabwe, Finland, Bosnia, Japan and Nigeria.  Two hours wasn’t enough.  Lots of dancing and big smiles!  In August next month, we will swing to Indonesia with Made Denis, Efiq Zulfiqar and the Gold Coast Balinese Gamelan Group.  Come along early to enjoy the Indonesian Students Association of QLD’s Pasar Rakyat celebrations at the Powerhouse.  There will be heaps of delicious offerings at the food stalls and various fun activities that start at 4pm in the outdoors area.

BEMAC was very excited to travel up to Rockhampton to meet up with arts and multicultural organisations to start discussions on our new regional initiative as part of our ENGAGE programme.  We will be conducting Music Industry Training and Event management courses to CALD artists and communities and have been overwhelmed with our welcome to Rocky and the enthusiasm of the local communities.  Closer to home, we will begin our Brisbane leg of the ENGAGE programme on the 30th of July and we have 15 amazing talents about to embark on a ten-week music training and development course.  Big names of the future, so we will be introducing them to you very shortly.

We look forward to seeing you at one of our events!
