Real-life stories of Filipinos in diaspora: stories of migration, love and heartbreak, joys and sorrows, familial ties and old friendships, and everything in between.
Three ‘balikbayans’ (returning Filipinos) meet at the local “sari-sari” store in a small town in the Philippines. Here they share the challenges and successes of their lives as migrants in Australia and elsewhere. They also respond to the curious questions of their ‘kababayans’ (townmates) and old friends who have never lived overseas.
A ubiquitous landmark in most localities in the Philippines, the sari-sari store is not only a place to purchase groceries but also serves as a safe space for people to gather and exchange stories. The shopkeeper becomes the bearer of the tales of the locals, those who come and go, those who are just passing through.
Over a cold San Miguel beer, pulutan, songs and music, the ‘balikbayans’ and their ‘kababayans’ enjoy each other’s company; a moment in time that is both a reconnection to the homeland and an acquiescence of the migrant life.
Featuring original songs from the TunogLokalQLD Project, composed and performed live by the cast members
